In Minnesota alone, medical mistakes have been linked to 20
deaths in Minnesota hospitals in 2003. A 2003 Minnesota Department of
Health report confirms that, in the first year hospitals were required to track
such events, 30 of the state's hospitals reported at least one "never" event --
mistakes that should never happen, even by the hospital's own admission.
These "never" events include deaths associated with medication errors, burns,
operations on the wrong body part, and surgical teams leaving equipment inside
patients.

Medical professionals such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and
medical technicians are human. Humans make mistakes. However, in our
increasingly hectic society, one in which profit sometimes trumps quality
healthcare, medical professionals are prone to make more mistakes than ever.
While many errors may have minor consequences, some result in much more serious
complications. . . The surgeon
who leaves a sponge inside the patient. Major consequence. The surgeon who
amputates the patient's right leg, when the left leg is infected and
scheduled for removal. Major consequence. The physician who prescribes two drugs
that if taken together can be fatal. Major consequence. While these errors are
understandable, they are never acceptable.
Failure to bring these medical
malpractice claims to light will only continue the flawed system. In fact, statistics
on medical malpractice reveal that for every medical error reported, over 50 go
unreported. Don't pay for your healthcare provider's negligence.
